Lily raised her head and put her hand to Sawyer’s face, wanting so desperately to stretch his face into a smile like she had for Scabior a few times prior. “I always told him he was perfect, no matter what was done.” She sighed gently. “He never believed it though, for all the marks he left upon his body.”

Sawyer’s expression evened out, not necessarily sad anymore, but not fully smiling, either. The result was just a slight upturn of the corners of his lips, but his eyes were communicating something else. “He just wanted more, I think. He always wanted to be better, no matter what. Even if he could’ve been something that all the world would have deemed as perfect, he still would want more.” He sighed and shook his head. “He used to say some cryptic things like- ‘The only perfection I’ve ever found is in blood and music.’ I never understood that one. I know he loved music, but I don’t see what…” he trailed off and shook his head. “Never mind.”

Lily sighed rather painfully, pulling her attention from Sawyer immediately. “I know what he meant by those words,” she whispered painfully. “I believe I know exactly what they meant.”

“I know he cut,” he sighed, tracing the table with his fingertips. “I understood that. I guess I just never understood the release it gave him… I don’t see how he found perfection innit, is what I mean.” He shook his head again, eyes shut. “And then his last words were something about chaos. I guess I can’t easily understand his mind. He was mad anyways, eh?” He gave a sad smile.

“Mad in a sense,” she whispered. “I’ve made my own mistakes when it comes to situations such as that, but we all have our faults.” Lily sighed once more and turned to him, her eyes just a bit bloodshot. “I’m sorry,” she said slowly.

“Oh, don’t think I think that ‘cause he self-harmed,” Sawyer interjected softly. Slowly, he placed his hand over Lily’s. “I only say that given to his mental state when… I last saw him.” His tone, he tried to keep even. “You don’t need to be sorry- if anything, I’m sorry to have offended.”

Lily shook her head slowly. “No, I know what you meant and you didn’t offend.” She sighed without hesitation and closed her eyes again. “Let’s speak of the better times, shall we?” Her voice began to trail and she let a small smile spread to her face. “Did he ever play his violin around you?”

At her question, a smile spread across Sawyer’s face, as well. “Not for me specifically,” he said admittedly. “But sometimes, he’d play at night if he couldn’t sleep… like his own version of ‘Taps’, except there was a lot more variety. I’d stay up just to listen.” His smile grew with the fond memories. “He was brilliant at it, too. By far the best I’d heard. Until some of the other Dogs told him to shut up, of course,” he rolled his eyes with a smirk. “At which he’d threaten to play till dawn unless they learned to suck it up. Not that I would’ve minded… I take it he played for you often?”

Lily near beamed at Sawyer’s words. She remembered when he’d unwrapped the present before her and the look that had presented onto his face made her heart melt. “Well … I was the one who bought it for him. Well, his newest one at least.”

That moment when you finish a book, look around, and realize that everyone is just carrying on with their lives as though you didn’t just experience emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback.

Sawyer nodded, but his train of thought went zooming off again- what of Scabior’s daughter? Would she, too, hear stories? If he could help it, certainly. He had already been appointed as an uncle (Uncle Scar, he fondly remembered) for Becca’s kid Lisa, and he hoped maybe he could hold a similar position for the young Scabior. “Well, I have plenty if you ever need more,” he said, rather jokingly. “Though I imagine you have plenty of your own, as well.”

Lily laughed gently and squeezed Sawyer’s shoulder ever so slightly. “Oh, I have plenty, but I’d always love to hear more of my family.” Slowly she dropped her head and whispered, “he was a good man.”

Sawyer nodded, but he frowned a bit as she dropped her head. “He was a great man- perfect in some respects, though he wouldn’t let himself believe it.” He shook his head.

Sawyer, unable to hold it back, busted out laughing. “Oh, Merlin,” he said between chuckles. “Yeah, I’d think that’d be a great way to describe it.” He took awhile to compose himself, and wiped the tears from his eyes- he hadn’t laughed like that in quite awhile. “If I’d known what I was getting into when I first met him in the Snatchers…” he trailed off into a few more chuckles.

Lily laughed again, tears shinning in her eyes as well. “He was a good man. I’m sure we both have plenty of stories to tell.”

Sawyer’s face was spread into a wide grin. “He was a great man,” he said. “I kinda idolized him, despite everything going on in his head… Sure, he was a bit crazy, and he had his moments, but… he was brilliant at the best of times.” He looked down and shook his head, the smile still on his face.

Lily cautiously placed her hand upon Sawyer’s shoulder, the wide grin still on her face. “His true friends and family idolized him and loved him no matter what was going on in his head. I do know that my little Joel and Faye idolized him. I do wish Dora was able to have gotten to know him better.”

Sawyer didn’t even flinch as she touched him, he merely looked up at her with a smile. “I’m glad he had such a great family to come home to. And he loved Dora, even if he only ever really saw her when she was a baby… Besides, I’m sure she’ll hear some stories.”

Lily smiled upon realizing that Sawyer was slowly becoming more comfortable. Her words hit her in the heart but in a way that felt heartwarming. “Thank you, Sawyer.” She paused and looked back at him. “She will hear plenty. I’m sure.”
